Schema Therapy in Rotterdam & Online

Schema Therapy helps you understand and change deeply rooted emotional and behavioural patterns that may be affecting your relationships, self-esteem and wellbeing.

What Is Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy helps you understand and change deeply rooted patterns that are no longer working for you.

In psychology, schemas are deeply held beliefs, feelings, memories, and assumptions about yourself, other people, and the world around you. They influence how you interpret situations, how you feel, and how you respond to others.

For example, you may repeatedly feel that you are not good enough, that you cannot trust others, that you have to take care of everyone, or that your needs are less important than those of others. Although these patterns may once have helped you cope, they can become unhelpful later in life.

In schema therapy, these persistent patterns are sometimes described as “traps” because they can keep you stuck in the same emotional and behavioural cycles.

How Do Unhelpful Schemas Develop?

Many schemas develop during childhood, particularly when important emotional needs are not sufficiently met. However, schemas can also be reinforced or developed through experiences later in life.

Children have fundamental emotional needs, including:

  • Safety and security
  • Connection and belonging
  • Emotional support and acceptance
  • Healthy self-esteem
  • Autonomy and independence
  • Freedom to express emotions and needs
  • Play, spontaneity, and creativity
  • Reasonable and consistent boundaries

These needs may not be adequately met because of experiences such as neglect, abuse, bullying, rejection, loss, excessive criticism, instability, or a lack of emotional availability. Overprotection or excessive control can also interfere with the development of autonomy and self-confidence.

As a result, a child may develop ways of thinking and coping that make sense at the time. Later in life, however, these patterns may no longer be helpful.

How Does Schema Therapy Work?

Schema therapy helps you recognise your patterns, understand where they come from, and develop healthier ways of responding.

Together with your therapist, you explore:

  • What situations trigger your emotions
  • Which thoughts and beliefs become activated
  • Which emotional needs may be underneath your reactions
  • How you learned to cope with difficult experiences
  • How your patterns affect your relationships and everyday life
  • How you can respond differently in the present

Schema therapy combines elements of several therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment-based approaches, experiential techniques, and emotion-focused work.

The therapeutic relationship is also important. Your therapist provides a safe, supportive, and respectful environment in which you can explore experiences and needs that may previously have been difficult to express.

The aim is not simply to understand your past. The goal is to change the patterns that keep you stuck and develop healthier, more flexible ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

Breaking Old Patterns

You cannot always change what happened in the past, but you can learn to respond differently in the present.

Schema therapy can help you develop a stronger sense of self, healthier boundaries, more balanced relationships, and greater confidence in meeting your own emotional needs.

Do you recognise yourself in these patterns and would you like to explore how schema therapy could help you?
